Quotation lettering on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white photograph of a forearm carrying a block of typeset black lettering, a quotation about meals, education, culture, dignity and freedom, ending with the attribution Dr. M.L.K jr. The lines are centred and vary in length, filling the forearm from the wrist upward. A thin black band is visible at the wrist against a dark background.

Dunstan had been setting the same six lines since seven, and the forme still sat crooked in the chase. He counted letters on his fingers, the way his mother had counted stitches, trying to make each longer line balance the shorter ones without spilling into the margin. Precious from flat 41 came in with a carrier bag and read over his shoulder, lips moving over the backwards letters. "Breakfast, schooling, all that," she said. "Who's it for?" He told her the food bank wanted a poster for the church hall on Saturday. She tapped the word dignity on the stick. "That's a big word for a bit of lead." He said it was a big word for everyone, and she laughed and said he had ink on his nose.
He locked the forme, inked the rollers and pulled a proof. The sheet came off the bed slowly, and when he peeled it back the lines stood up straight and read the right way round, every one of them centred as if the page had been measured with a string.
Precious asked for three copies. She pinned one to the lift doors on the ground floor, where nobody had bothered to take the sign down, and by Friday there was a tin of beans taped under it with a note asking who else was hungry.
