Vertical text and reclining figure on leg

Fine line · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A black and grey photograph of a leg with a column of small serif lettering running down the calf, set in a stacked, repeated phrase. Across the top of the foot is a fine outline drawing of a figure lying on its side with its legs stretched out. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the plain pale wall and wooden floor keep the focus on the skin.

By the third week without rain, the well at Scarrow had shrunk to a green puddle and the chapel bell had split from the heat. Jane Tulley was the only one who refused to hurry about it. She lay down in the lane beside the pump, arms loose, and told the vicar's cat that she wanted a drink of water and would wait for it.

Her neighbours ran in circles. Old Mr Hobday hauled a barrel up from the beck on a handcart and cursed every yard of the hill. The baker's boy sprinted to the reservoir and back twice a day, his boots slapping. Jane only turned her head to watch the sky go from white to pewter and back to white again, murmuring lazy, lazy, lazy under her breath as though it were a lullaby.

On the ninth morning a grey smudge rose over the moor. Hobday swore it was smoke from the quarry. The boy swore it was dust. Jane got up slowly, brushed the grass from her skirt, and held out her cupped hands like a girl at a fountain.

The rain came sideways, fat and warm, and by teatime the lane was running with it. Hobday filled his barrel to the brim and the boy filled his cap. Jane lay back down in the middle of the road, opened her mouth to the sky, and drank until the whole village stood under the eaves to see if she would ever stop.
