Quote and birds on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows three lines of small sans-serif lettering reading you are beautiful, you are valuable, you are enough, set along the forearm with several small birds in flight. The linework is thin and crisp in solid black ink, with no visible shading or colour. The black and white photograph shows the forearm angled diagonally across the frame, with a floral dress sleeve on the left and an open hand wearing a ring on the right.

Sit down, sit down, you'll not catch the 4.12 standing up like that. Dunmere Junction, the winter the glass roof came down in the gale. There was a porter there called Albert Feeney with hands like coal shovels and a voice as soft as a hymn, and every morning he swept the platform before the first train, and every morning the swifts dropped from the eaves to pick at the crumbs under the bench.

One October a young woman came off the Leeds train with one brown case and a ticket for the end of the line. Her coat was too thin for the weather and her train was two hours late, so she sat on that bench with her gloves in her lap. The swifts, which never came down for anybody, came down for her. Albert watched them from the doorway of his little office. Then he went back inside, found a luggage label and a stub of pencil, and wrote on it in square capitals, the way his mother taught him to write for the post.
He carried it out and handed it over without a word. She read it, and then she laughed, the kind of laugh that surprises the person laughing. The label said only what was true about her case, her ticket and the birds, and nothing about the sky or the sea, which was the thing she had been dreading. Albert tipped his cap and went back to his broom.
The 4.12 came in at last, steaming and cross. She climbed aboard, and as the carriages pulled out, the swifts lifted off the eaves all at once, a whole handful of them, and flew alongside her window for the length of the platform before the gate and the fields took them.
