Quote and blackletter letter on upper back
Lettering · Back · Mixed · Photo
A photograph of a tattoo on a person's upper back near the shoulder blade, showing a large blackletter capital letter with a black outline and red shading that fades from dark to bright red. The black script phrase Your Pain Is A Gift runs beside the letter, with a dark cap-like shape across its top. The image is warm toned with a blurred indoor background and a pale bra strap visible across the shoulder.

The letter had been cooling on the anvil since dawn, and I had been told twice not to touch it. Old Abel Crane had forged the bar himself from a bundle of charcoal iron, but the D for Ma Thorne's gate was my job, the first thing I had ever been trusted to finish. I had spent two days hammering the strokes square. My arm shook on every blow, and by the third afternoon the iron had burned a white welt into my palm that wept through the rag.

Abel took the bar from me without a word. He reheated it until it went the colour of a cherry in August, then dipped only the top into the quench trough, so the cap hissed and blackened while the body glowed on. "Hard where you've been cruel to it," he said, "soft where you need to bend." He pressed a cold cloth to my hand. "Your pain is a gift, boy. Don't waste it on the hammer."
I took it for an old man's riddle and walked home sulking past the edge of Thorne Wood, where the pines lean over the lane like gossips. The gate went up in April. Ma Thorne ran her thumb over the D, found the black cap and the red bleeding down its stem, and asked who had made it. Abel jerked his chin at me. I had nothing to say, so I said nothing, and she laughed and paid us in eggs.
That was years ago. I still stop at the gate on my way out to the trees. The letter has rusted to the colour of old brick, and the top is still black, and I have noticed that my hands have not shaken since the day I stopped asking the iron to forgive me.
