Quote and cherry blossoms on a calf

Traditional · Calf · Mixed · Photo

A back-of-leg view of a calf against a black background, with a quote in black lettering reading "Only those who risk going too far can possibly find out how far they can go". Three pink and red cherry blossom flowers sit around the text, and a dark, shaded figure with brown and bronze tones rises from the lower calf. The photograph is evenly lit and centred on the tattoo, with a blue sock and a worn boot visible at the bottom of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Ada Thorne had been told since she could walk that the cherry trees at the edge of Hollin Wood were not to be climbed, and certainly not beyond the third boundary stone. The stones were older than the church. Her grandfather said they marked where the parish ended and the wood began, and that the wood had never agreed to the arrangement.

She went anyway on the first warm morning of April, with a stolen loaf in her satchel and the blossom coming down pink on her shoulders like something being settled. Past the third stone the trees thickened and the light turned brown. Her boots, which had been her brother's, filled with cold water within a hundred paces. She stopped at a clearing where a figure stood among the trunks, dark bronze and taller than a man, its surface scored by many winters. Someone had polished the face once. A patch of brightness still showed where a hand had rubbed it.

Ada did not run. She walked around it slowly, the way you would circle a sleeping dog, and when she came back to the front she found a line cut into the plinth in a careful hand: only those who risk going too far can possibly find out how far they can go.

She laughed, loudly, and the wood answered in a dozen small ways, birds lifting, petals falling. Then she turned and counted her steps home, one stone, two, three. At the third she did not stop, because the village lamps below were close enough now to show her the path she had made.
