Now sit still, because this is the part where the wood starts listening. Nell Dacre was nine the winter the miller's boy said the moon was only a lamp hung on a nail by the church. She didn't believe him, but she didn't believe her mother either, who said it was further than any string could reach. So Nell took a ball of tarred twine from the cobbler's bench and walked to the edge of Hollin Wood, where the trees stand back as if they're waiting to be asked a question.

She paid the line out over the stile, past the blackthorn, past the old well where the frogs keep their own hours. The twine ran through her fingers all night. By the time the sky went grey it had made a long road behind her, and still the moon hung over the oaks, thin as a paring, pale as milk left out for the fox.

Here is the turn. When the last of the twine ran out, she tied it to the lowest branch of the oldest oak and tugged. The branch bent. Something at the far end pulled back, gentle and certain, the way a fish does. Nell understood then that the moon was not so far off after all. It only needed a person at each end, holding on.

She went home at breakfast with raw hands, and her mother was already crying at the door. Nell never told her what she had found. She just pointed up, where the moon was fading into the blue, and said, to the moon and back, and that was enough for both of them.
