Quote and crescent moon on the inner wrist
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo reads I love you to the moon and back in black, handwritten-style lettering across the skin, with a solid black crescent moon beneath the final words. The linework is clean and even with no shading, and the image is entirely black ink on pale skin. The text is set diagonally and the crescent sits at the lower left, with the wrist and forearm filling most of the frame.

The bell had rung for Matins twice before Brother Osric finished the capital I, and the ink had already crept into the grain of the vellum where he had pressed too hard. The miller's boy stood in the scriptorium doorway with his cap in both hands, waiting to learn whether the letter would reach Wisbech before the river rose.

It was for a girl who could not read Latin and would not read anything else. Osric wrote it plain, in the English hand the abbot forbade in the choir books. I love you, he wrote, and then he asked the boy how far it was to the moon. The boy shrugged. Osric told him the moon came down over the fen each night and touched every reed, so it was not so far at all. To the moon and back, he wrote, and that was the measure.
The boy asked whether anyone had ever measured such a thing. Osric said no, and that was why it was the right measure. He sanded the page, folded it three times, and sealed it with a thumb of red wax. The boy ran off into the dark with the lantern swinging, and Osric went back to his desk and wrote the Psalms until his fingers cramped.
The letter came home eleven years later in the satchel of a drowned carter, the seal still whole. Osric broke it himself in the cold cloister. Inside was no reply, only a crescent drawn in charcoal, and beneath it, in a hand he did not know, a single word: still.
