Black and grey fine line script tattoo reading I love you to the moon and back, with a small crescent moon below, on the inner forearm.

Moon and back quote with crescent moon on forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A black and white photograph of an inner forearm bearing the handwritten phrase "I love you to the moon and back" in thin, slightly uneven script. A small solid black crescent moon sits beneath the last line of text. The ink is crisp and even, with the lettering set diagonally across the arm against a softly blurred background.

Sit down, love, the kettle's only just boiled and nobody's bleeping us for a while. See that window? Past the car park there's nothing but the moon coming up over the gasworks, same as the night Maureen Tully brought her boy in to ward four.

Her lad was Danny, nine years old, all elbows and no sense of fear. They were putting a pin in his arm, nothing grand, but he wouldn't let go of his mum's sleeve until she dug a biro out of her handbag and wrote on the inside of his forearm. Crooked letters, the way she wrote her shopping lists. I love you to the moon and back. Then, because he asked, she drew a little crescent beneath it, and he went down to theatre looking like a knight going into battle.

The theatre lift stuck between floors that night, and by the time it was fixed I was the porter on duty, so I was the one who wheeled Maureen up to the relatives' room. I had to tell her he was fine, and that he'd been asking for the moon. She laughed and cried at once and said that biro had been the last one in the house that worked.

Danny's grown now and lives a long way off. Last Christmas he sent me a card with a photograph of that arm. The ink's gone soft and grey at the edges, but the moon's still as sharp as a fingernail. Mind your tea, Nell. Some things you only need to write down once.
