Black lettering reading 'To die will be an awfully big adventure' above a thin outlined eight-pointed star, tattooed on a forearm in a lettering style.

Quote and star on a forearm

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo is three lines of bold serif capitals reading 'TO DIE WILL BE AN AWFULLY BIG ADVENTURE', with a simple outlined eight-pointed star below and slightly left of centre. The lines are solid black with even weight, and the star is a clean outline with a plain, unshaded centre. The photo is taken straight on against pale skin, with the tattoo filling most of the frame and a wooden floor and white wall visible at the edges.

Dear Ruth,

Night shift on Ward 9 is quieter than you'd think, once the commode trolley has been round and the last obs are charted. Mr Okonedo in bed four asked me again tonight whether the star outside his window was the one that points home. I told him it was probably a planet, and he laughed at me the way you used to when I got the constellations wrong on the drive to Whitby.

He's the one who keeps the sentence on the card above his locker. Somebody wrote it out for him in marker, in capitals, because his eyes are too tired for small print now. TO DIE WILL BE AN AWFULLY BIG ADVENTURE. The first time I read it aloud he made me say it twice, then told me it came from a children's book he'd read to his grandsons, and that the boy who never grows up was wrong about nearly everything except that.

Around three he woke and wanted the blind up. I pulled it and we sat there, him looking at the sky over the car park and me pretending to fill in the medication sheet. He didn't speak for a long while. Then he tapped the blanket twice, the way a man signals a navigator, and said, "Right. Due north, then."

I don't know where he's gone tonight, only that he's still breathing and the monitor is steady. I'll tell you the rest in the morning.

Love, Carol
