Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of two lines of black script lettering tattooed along a forearm, with a flourished capital Y and I at the start of each line. The linework is clean and even, and the ink is solid black with no colour. The text is set on a diagonal across the skin against a dark background, with the lettering filling most of the frame.

The flour was still warm in the sack when the steward came up the lane with his ledger under one arm and a constable behind him. "The loan is called in," said the steward. "Your oven, your stone, your shutters. Everything the bank can lift." He tapped the ledger. "The hill view goes with the house, too. My master has bought the field above. You'll bake in the dark from now on."

Ada wiped her hands on her apron and walked to the window. The hill was turning from black to pewter, and the first lark was already climbing into the cold. "You can have the oven," she said. "You can have the stone and the bench and the iron hinges. I don't care about any of it."

She threw the shutter wide, and the air came in smelling of wet grass and yeast. "I'm still free," she said, and the constable looked up as though someone had rung a bell. "You can't take the sky from me."
