Quote tattoo in decorative script

Lettering · Black and grey · Photo

A black and grey photograph of the phrase not all those who wander are lost tattooed across two lines on smooth skin. The letters use a decorative, calligraphic script with pointed strokes, small dots and hooked marks, in solid black ink with soft grey tones at the edges. The plain, pale background keeps the focus on the lettering, which fills most of the frame.

Father kept the old survey chart pinned above the stove in the back room of the shop in Lancaster, and the phrase was written in his cramped hand along the bottom margin, below a coastline that no longer existed. He only smiled and drew a little more carefully.

The summer I turned sixteen, I took the pencil from him. I wanted to show him the lane behind the mill, the one that bent back on itself and came out at the same gate it went in by, and I wanted him to see it wasn't a mistake. I walked it with a notebook and a tin of biscuits and came back four hours later with the sun gone red and my boots soaked. The gate was there. The mill was there. But the lane had three forks I had never noticed before, and one of them smelled of woodsmoke and cold apples.

When I told him, he didn't look surprised. He pulled the chart down, turned it over, and showed me a second line of writing on the back that I had never seen, in the same looping letters: Come back and tell me what you found. Then he laughed for the first time in a month and said, that's the trouble with maps, love, they never put the good bits on the front.

I went back the next morning with fresh paper. I still have the sheet, and the three forks are drawn on it in pencil, and beside the middle one, very small, I wrote the name of the place we were standing in.
