Quote lettering on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close-up photograph of a pale inner forearm with a two-line quote in small black capital letters, set in a clean sans-serif typeface. The lettering is crisp and evenly weighted, sitting centrally on the forearm against plain skin. A small crescent moon tattoo is visible on the hand at the edge of the frame, and the person wears dark clothing against a neutral outdoor background.

Mabel had the ladder against the lych gate before the dew burned off, scraping the parish notice board back to bare grain. The vicar wanted a verse in gold leaf. The forest ran right up to the churchyard wall, and the rooks were already quarrelling in the oaks when she mixed the black enamel thin and ruled two chalk lines across the board. Her mother had spent forty years apologising for taking up room in kitchens. Mabel had watched it and decided early that she would not learn it. She shaped each capital carefully, the way her father had taught her, with no curls and no flourishes, so that a person could read it once, standing in the rain, and not need to read it twice.
By noon the words were dry. LOVE YOURSELF, SO NO ONE HAS TO. She added a small crescent moon in the lower corner, the mark the old sexton once chalked on the vestry door on nights when the bell ropes needed mending.
Tom Haskell came down the lane with his satchel bumping his hip and stopped in front of the board, sounding out each word under his breath. He looked at the moon for a long time. "Does it mean I don't have to be carried?" he asked. Mabel wiped her brush on the rag and said it meant he could walk, and that was the whole job of the board. He ran off towards the trees, and she stayed to watch the ink settle.
