Black and grey fine line lettering on the inner forearm reading she has fire in her soul and grace in her heart, set in two lines.

Two-line quote on inner forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A black and grey photograph of an inner forearm with two lines of uppercase lettering in a thin, hand-drawn style: SHE HAS FIRE IN HER SOUL and AND GRACE IN HER HEART. The linework is fine and even, with no shading, and the text sits centred on the arm against a dark grey wall and dark background. The image is sharp and well lit, with the arm filling the middle band of the frame.

Rain had been coming sideways across Dunmore Market since seven, and Margit Hale had given up feeling her fingers. She crouched under the edge of Nell's old flower stall with a tin of enamel paint and a brush that had lost half its bristles on a previous job, waiting for Ronan Fitch to stop arguing with the tarpaulin.

"Smaller," he said at last, wiping his glasses on a damp sleeve. "She'd not have wanted it shouting." Margit ruled two faint pencil lines across the zinc board, the way her father had taught her in a shed in Hull, and asked him to read the words out once more so she could hear the rhythm. He did, slowly, as though reading a shopping list he had forgotten to finish. She fire in her soul. Grace in her heart.

Nell had sold peonies and sharp opinions from that pitch for thirty-one years. She had argued with council inspectors, given free bunches to the lads who swept the gutters, and once thrown a bucket of cold water over a man who tried to pick the padlock on her cash box. Margit had never met her, but she had painted three of her signs already, and knew the handwriting of a woman who did not like to be ignored.

She worked without speaking. Plain capitals, no flourish, the letters standing up straight in the wet air. When she reached the last stroke of the final word the rain thinned to nothing, as if someone had lifted a hand from the sky. Margit rubbed the pencil guides away with her thumb, and under her skin they came off like breath from glass, leaving only the letters. Ronan put a hand flat on the board and didn't say anything for a long time.
