Peace will win, fear will lose on a forearm

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close-up of a forearm with a two-line quotation in black serif lettering, reading peace will win on the top line and fear will lose below it. The letters are solid black with crisp edges and slight softening in the strokes, and the ink looks evenly set into the skin. The text sits centred on the arm against a soft, lightly lit background of skin tones and blue tiles.

The card for the church hall was due by six. Peace will win, the copy read, and beneath it, in the smaller face the Reverend had chosen, fear will lose.

Mr Garrow leaned over her shoulder and tapped the bottom line with a nicotine-yellow finger. "Your l is sitting proud of the others," he said. "Knock it down. Nobody reads a poster for the typeface, but they feel it when it's off."

She knocked it down with the mallet, once and then again, and the little letter settled into its bed of metal. The shop smelled of ink and paraffin and the damp cardboard of proofs drying on the rack. Outside, a tram bell rang twice in the rain, and somebody laughed on the pavement and then went quiet.

When the forme was locked and the press had turned its first sheet, Ada pulled a proof and held it to the window. The words stood up black and certain against the grey paper, the lines as straight as a hem. Garrow took it from her, read it aloud under his breath, then folded it into his waistcoat pocket. "Keep the spare," he said. "Type stays exactly where you put it, whatever the weather does."
