Quote in serif lettering on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a forearm with the phrase Not all those who wander are lost in a single line of black serif lettering. The ink is crisp and even, with no shading, and the text sits horizontally across the centre of the arm. The background is softly out of focus in greens and yellows, which keeps attention on the words.

Dear Nell,

The cook on the Marigold Rose has taken to calling me the wanderer, which is rich coming from a man who has not left his galley stool since Grimsby. Last Tuesday I tried to explain why I keep signing on with coasters that never leave the North Sea. He said a woman who wanders the Baltic for tinned peaches is either a fool or a saint, and he has not decided which. I told him I was neither, only short of a berth on anything with a proper hearth.
Burn this after reading, because Captain Halloran reads our post, but I want you to know what happened at Tallinn. The harbour boy sold me a chart of the old town for two Danish coins, and it was wrong in every street. I walked for three hours with the wrong map and found a bakery that makes black bread with caraway, a bell tower with a crack down its middle, and an old man who taught me the word for tide in a language I still cannot say. None of it was on the chart. I came back to the ship with flour on my sleeves, and the crew asked whether I had got lost.
I said no. I said the chart was the thing that had lost its way.
Mam always said you would stray furthest, and I hope she is wrong about you and right about me, because that seems the only fair way round it. Send word to the Hull post office and I will find it when we dock on the eleventh.
Yours in salt and onions, Ada
