Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A foot is shown with the words Not all those who wander are lost written in thin, flowing black script across the top and side. A small, delicate compass-style ornament sits beside the ankle. The photograph is black and white, with crisp, even linework against pale skin and dark fabric behind.

The lost property cupboard at Hallam Junction smells of wet umbrellas and cheap aftershave, and you have catalogued all of it for nineteen years. On a Tuesday in March a man in a grey anorak leans on your counter and asks after a brass compass he cannot quite place. He thinks he left it on a bench in the waiting room, or possibly on a train to somewhere he meant to go. You ask him to describe it. He says it points true to nothing in particular, and that this is why he likes it.

You open the drawer where the odd things go. Beneath a tangle of bus passes and a single kid's glove sits a compass no wider than a button, its needle trembling as the drawer slides. The lid is engraved with a line you recognise from the sign above platform four, the one about wanderers. You tell him the spring has gone and will need replacing, and he laughs, saying he has been trying to replace a spring of his own for thirty years and has found the parts shop closed every time.
He asks how long you keep things before they go to auction in Leeds. Three months, you say. He nods at the drawer, writes his name on a card in careful capitals, and says he will come back in three months whether or not he has found his way. You pin the card to the board beside the others and do not expect to see him again.
In June a girl in a yellow coat arrives with the card in her hand and says her grandfather sent her. You hand over the compass. She turns it over, and for once the needle swings and settles, pointing at the door she came through.
