Quote tattoo across the lower back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a two-line quote in black script lettering across the lower back, with the text running slightly upwards from left to right. The linework is fine and even, with no shading, and the ink is a single dark tone against the skin. The grey clothing at the top and bottom frames the lettering, and the composition is centred on the words.

The rain had found the gap in the canvas again by eight, and Mrs Ansell moved her tin of waxed thread out from under the drip without looking up from the boot in her lap. On the roof the rain tapped like someone wanting attention. Along the row, traders were dragging shutters down and shouting to each other about diesel prices and whose van had a flat.

The boy came to the stall at ten past nine, maybe sixteen, holding out a pair of work boots so new the stitching still looked stiff. "They've rubbed my heels raw," he said. "Dad says they'll break in." Ansell turned one over, pressed her thumb along the welt, and said boots broke in the way rivers broke their banks, slowly and with complaint. Did he have thick socks? He didn't. She fetched a pair of grey wool from the drawer under the till and told him to wear them to the bus stop every morning for a week before he came back.
He came back on the Friday with rain still beaded on his collar. She had a scrap of cream card ready, written in her careful copperplate, and she tucked it into the lining of the left boot before she handed them over. He tipped the boot toward the bulb and read the words aloud, slowly, the way you read a shop sign in a language you are still learning. Then he laughed, embarrassed, and asked if she'd written it herself.
She said she had copied it from a card her mother kept above the kettle, and her mother had copied it from somebody else, and that was how the sayings people needed got passed along. She pulled the shutter halfway down. He walked out into the wet, and for the first time that week his boots made no sound at all on the wet cobbles.
