Script quote across the lower back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A single-line black script quote runs across the lower back in two lines of joined lettering, reading 'The pain you feel today... is the strength you feel tomorrow'. The linework is thin and even, with solid black ink and no shading, and the skin tone is warm against the grey clothing below. The composition is a close, slightly angled crop that keeps the full text in frame.

The snow had shut the Hollin Gate road by four, and by nine the only folk left in the Cold Ram were Tom Pickersgill, his lame mule, and me. Mrs Dobbs had banked the parlour fire until it sulked, then left us to it with a jug of ale and a candle stub that guttered whenever someone breathed too near.

Tom's boy was upstairs with a fever that had come on like a thief. Every quarter hour Tom climbed the stairs, came back down with snow melting off his collar, and sat without a word. On the third visit he took the pen from my hand, dipped it, and wrote on the inside cover of the inn's almanac, in capitals that leaned like fence posts: THE PAIN YOU FEEL TODAY. He looked at it a long while, then slid the pen back to me and tapped the page.
I finished it for him in my round hand, the way I had written out my mother's receipts for years: IS THE STRENGTH YOU FEEL TOMORROW. Neither of us believed a word of it, which may be why it held. By morning the boy had turned the corner, and the road was ploughed open by a team of Dales men with shovels and a great deal of swearing.
Tom left before the light. The almanac stayed on the desk, and I still have that page, though the ink has gone the colour of weak tea and the second line has bled into the first where the candle wax spilled across it.
