A close photograph from behind shows three lines of black serif lettering on the upper back, reading cheers to the miles it took to get here. The letters are solid black ink with crisp edges and no shading. The image is in greyscale, with the text placed left of centre near the shoulder blade and a dark strap crossing the lower right of the frame.

The lift had been out since Tuesday, so Len climbed the fourteen flights with his boots still grey from the towpath and a carrier bag knocking against his shin. Ruth heard him on the landing before she saw him, the wheezing and the muttered swearing, and she had the kettle on and two mugs out by the time he reached her door.

He'd walked it, he said, though not all of it. The Settle stretch he'd done by train, out of pride or sense, depending on who you asked. The rest had been canals and A-roads with lorries throwing spray across the verge. Three years had passed since their mum's funeral left them both with nothing to say, and in that time he had sent Ruth a postcard every week, each one from a different motorway service station.
From the carrier bag came a bottle of cheap cava, warm from his hip. "Glasses," he said. Ruth found two that matched, which felt like a small victory, and then he poured it into the mugs anyway because nobody had thought to buy flutes. They stood at the window with the sodium lights of the car park below, and he lifted his mug.
"Cheers to the miles it took to get here," he said, and she laughed, because it was exactly the sort of daft line their mum used to write in birthday cards. The bubbles fizzed over her knuckles. A goods train rumbled past the estate and the glass hummed in its frame. Ruth thought of the fourteen flights he had climbed and the years she had let him walk alone, then clinked her mug against his. "Sit down," she said. "You're dripping on my lino."
