Quote tattoo along the ribs

Lettering · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A close side view of a torso shows the phrase everything is alright forever tattooed in black serif lettering across the ribs. The letters are crisp and solid with even spacing, and the words run in a gently sloping line. A grey top is pulled up and a black lace bra is visible above the tattoo against a dark background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nobody on Skerrow Rock ever asked Walter Pryce why he had painted those words above the lamp room door. He used the same black serif letters he used for the tide tables, and he did it the autumn the second boat went over in the Sound. I was the new hand that winter, sent out with a kitbag and a bad cough, and I read the words every time I climbed the spiral stair with the paraffin.

Walter liked to say the sea was a clerk, not a thief. It wrote everything down and forgot nothing, so a man had better be honest with it. I thought that was nonsense until the February gale tore away the boat rail and the wireless, and the two of us sat in the lamp room for three nights, trimming the wick by hand while the glass shook in its frame. On the second night he asked me to read the lintel aloud, as if it were a hymn.

I did. My voice gave out halfway through forever. He laughed, which was the first time I had heard him do it, and said the sea had never once lied to him about the weather, only about how long it would take to end. Then he fell asleep in his chair with his boots still on, and I kept the light until dawn.

They relieved us on the Thursday. Walter retired to Hartlepool and died there the following spring. The paint has faded now, so I went back in June with a tin of black enamel and a fine brush, and I touched up the last word where the salt had taken it. Everything is alright forever. I wanted it to be true for at least one more keeper.
