Quote tattoo along the ribs
Lettering · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey photograph of a tattoo on the side of a torso, with the words 'Here's to a long line of sinners like me' set in two lines of lowercase and capital script. The lettering uses solid, moderately weighted strokes with soft edges, and the ink sits centrally on smooth skin against a dark background. Fingers are visible at the top right edge of the frame.

Nell had counted the glasses twice, and there was still one short. Her uncle Dennis had poured every cup of cider in the Hollins Arms since the bell at St Aldhelm's stopped, and now the back room smelled of wet wool and the apple press out in the yard. Somebody had to say it. Everybody looked at the window, where the beech wood stood black against the last of the light, as if the old poacher might come walking out of it with a brace of rabbits and a grin.

Her grandmother had been a poacher's daughter, a smuggler's niece, and the one who taught Nell to lay a snare without snapping a finger. She had also stolen the parish plate in 1958, or so the story went, and blamed a fox. Nell lifted her glass. The cider was sharp enough to make her eyes water. "Here's to a long line of sinners like me," she said, and the room laughed too loudly, the way people do when they have been waiting all afternoon for permission.
Dennis wiped his eyes with the back of his wrist. He said Gran would have hated the hymns and loved the cake. Then he remembered the one glass that had no name on it, the chipped tumbler kept on the top shelf for whoever had forgotten to come, and he filled it to the brim and set it on the bar with a clink.
Nobody touched it. Out in the trees, something rustled, then went quiet, and Nell decided it was a fox, and that she would not be telling anyone otherwise.
