Two-line script quote on the side of the torso
Lettering · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo is two lines of cursive script in black ink, reading Every saint has a past and Every sinner has a future. The lines are set one above the other and slope slightly downward from left to right. The linework is fine and even, with the lettering sitting on smooth, pale skin at the side of the torso, and a hand is visible at the left edge of the frame.

It was from her sister Agnes, who had not written since the summer they argued over the Tanner boy and the church roof fund. Agnes wrote in the same looping hand she had used for the parish register, pressing so hard the nib had torn the paper twice.

She said she had found the old tin of letters under the stairs at Mother's, and among them a receipt for a dress that had never been worn to any dance, and a folded drawing of a bird with no legs. She said she was sorry she had called Marjorie a liar in front of the vicar. She did not say she was wrong to, and Marjorie noticed that and was glad of it. Then, at the bottom, in pencil: the kettle still whistles like you used to hum.
Marjorie folded the letter into her apron pocket and went out to the lane, where the hedges were full of wet sparrows and the ground smelled of turned earth. She walked the long way past the mill pond, past the wooden stile and the stand of larches at the edge of the village, and when she reached the gate she stopped and read the letter again, slowly, the way you might walk back over a field you have already crossed to see whether you left anything behind.
