The magistrate has offered me the ledger for the granary, and I have said yes. I counted the barley twice, as you taught me, and both times the figures came out the same. I find that more frightening than any crown. Kings, I have learned, spend most of their days being counted by somebody else.

I have had the words scratched into the plaster above my desk, in the same plain letters the masons used on the granary lintel, so I cannot forget them even when the ink runs dry.
