Black lettering tattoo of a serif quote across the inside of a forearm, lying on grass in warm sunlight.

Quote tattoo on a forearm

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a forearm resting on grass, with a line of black serif text tattooed across it reading "i fell in love the way you fall asleep; slowly, and then all at once." The lettering is solid black ink in a clean, even typeface with a slight softness from the photo. The warm, sunlit grass fills the background and frames the arm diagonally.

You meet Marguerite in the June the council stops mowing the verge outside the old lock-keeper's cottage, and you tell yourself it is the nettles you have come to see. She is kneeling in the long grass with a trowel and a tin of bent nails, pulling up something she calls bindweed and you think is just a pretty white nuisance. She does not look up. "You can hold the bag or you can leave," she says, and you hold the bag.

For three weeks you come back after the shop closes. You learn that she names the foxes that cross the allotment and that she has never once been asked to explain why she stays on the lock. You learn the difference between a sleeping bulb and a dead one, which is less than you feared. Nothing happens quickly. The sun goes down a little later each evening, and you notice it the way you notice a hand settling on the back of a chair, slowly, until you are sitting in her garden at ten o'clock without a jumper and neither of you has said a word about it.

In the last week of July the hosepipe ban arrives, and she tells you the cottage will be sold in August. You plant the foxgloves anyway. You carry water down the towpath in a watering can, one bucket at a time, pretending it is a practical matter.

In September the bed has come up in the dark, purple spikes you did not plant, and she is gone to her sister's in Leeds. Her note under the trowel says only: it went all at once. You leave the spade where she left it, and you water the foxgloves anyway.
