Quote tattoo on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A forearm rests on grass, showing a line of black serif lettering that reads 'i fell in love the way you fall asleep; slowly, and then all at once.' The letters are crisp, evenly spaced and solid black, with the text running slightly downward across the arm. The warm, soft-focus outdoor setting with green grass fills the background.

Nobody believed her until the summer Edwin Marsh came up the lane with a hay cart and stayed on to help with the picking.

He slept under the big Blenheim every afternoon, hat over his face, boots crossed at the ankle. Hester brought him cold tea in a stone jar and watched him drift off the way the light slides down the barn wall, a bit at a time. She counted the days by how long he lay there before he stirred. Four minutes, then eleven, then most of an hour.
On the last Sunday in August the wind came over the ridge without warning and the trees began to shed. Apples struck the tin roof like hail. Edwin woke with a start to find the grass around him full of fruit, red and gold and bruised, and Hester standing in the middle of it with her apron full. He said he had not known he was falling asleep until he was awake again.
She told him Mother Ferrier's saying. He laughed at first, then stopped, because he had been watching her the whole time and she had let him. They gathered the windfalls by lantern light until the cart was full. By Michaelmas the Blenheim stood bare, and Hester was wearing a ring she had not gone looking for.
