Script quote on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A handwritten script quote runs diagonally along the forearm, reading 'for when i am weak, then i am strong'. The thin, even black linework has a light, cursive feel, with the word 'strong' written larger and bolder than the rest. The black and white photograph shows the lettering against pale skin on a plain background.

The heat off the tarmac has turned the white line to a shimmer, and the hire car's air conditioning gives up somewhere past the last petrol station at Coyote Wells. You pull onto the verge because your hands have started shaking on the wheel, and you tell yourself it is only the sun. The road runs out ahead in a grey ribbon with nothing on it but haze and a dead jackrabbit.

The glovebox holds the paperwork, a torch, and the envelope Nan pushed into your palm at the airport. Inside is a single sheet of lined paper, her looping hand running down the page the careful way it had become once her fingers started to go. You read it once, then again. Near the bottom she has written the sentence you have been trying not to hear all morning: for when i am weak, then i am strong. She pressed the pen so hard on that last word that the paper dimpled under it.
You picture her at the kitchen table in Tucson, eighty-one and stubborn, the kettle ticking as it cooled. You never asked what she meant, and now the verge is hot enough to blister and the nearest town is forty miles of nothing. You step out, leave the door open, and walk to the middle of the empty road with the paper folded in your fist.
A pickup crests the rise a long time later, slows, and a man with a dented thermos leans across to ask if you need a lift. You say yes before you can argue with yourself, and the word comes out easy as breath. You fold the note into your back pocket, where the wind cannot take it, and climb in.
