Quote tattoo on a thigh
Lettering · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a four-line quotation tattooed across the outer thigh, set in a clean sans-serif typeface with uneven line spacing. The ink is a dark purple-black with solid, even strokes and no shading. The text fills most of the frame against pale skin, with a bare foot visible at the lower right edge.

Nell, who ran the coconut shy and had a library book folded into her apron pocket, stood at the foot of the ladder and asked for the words to go along the bottom edge, where the queue waited for the carousel. She had copied them out in pencil on the back of a raffle ticket, and the capitals leaned the way a child writes when she is trying very hard. Dilys said the boards were warped and the lines would never sit square. Nell said she didn't mind, as long as they were there.
So the lines wandered a little, each one drifting its own way like people walking into a headwind. Dilys painted the last word, broken, and climbed down to find the lorry already ticking as it cooled. That night the fair pulled out of Ely in drizzle, and the headlights swept back across the board before the turn at the level crossing. For a moment the wet enamel took the light, and Nell's crooked line shone out over the empty field.
