Quote tattoo on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white photograph of a forearm with a three-line quote in a typewriter-style serif font, centred across the skin. The lettering is solid black ink with clean, even edges and a slight softness typical of healed text. The plain pale skin and dark background keep the focus on the words.

The typewriter had a sticky e, so every e in the lighthouse returns came out a shade lighter than the rest, and Mr Pell said nobody at the Board would notice. I typed the dates while he stood at the window with his cap in his hands, watching the lamp room roof where the gulls had cracked a glass panel the autumn before.

"Write what I say, Ellen, not what you think I mean," he said. "Lamp lit at dusk. Visibility poor. One panel damaged, no repair possible until the spring boat."
I typed it. The bell on the carriage rang at the end of each line, and each time it rang he flinched a little, as if it were a ship signalling through fog.
On the last morning before the relief keeper came across from Saltcombe, he stopped me before I rolled out the sheet. He took a card from his coat, soft as cloth, with a line he had copied years back from a book his wife used to read aloud. He asked me to type it beneath his signature, where the Board would never bother to read. I set the card flat beside the keys and struck the letters one at a time: we are all broken, that's how the light gets in.
That night the fog lifted, and the cracked panel threw a thin white bar across the harbour, straight over the herring boats to the breakwater. Pell sat on the step and watched it, and I left the sheet curling on the platen.
