For years he had carried a racket in his head, a market of voices all bargaining at once. His mother's debts, the bell that cracked in the chapel tower, the king's tax on salt. When the miller's daughter, Edda, asked him at the well whether he meant to marry her or merely stand there holding her bucket, he opened his mouth and heard nothing but the clamour. She waited. The water spilled over his boots.

That evening he sat before the tinker's machine and pressed the keys one at a time. Each strike rang out clear as a hammer on an anvil, and each letter came up black on the paper, unhurried and certain. He typed until the lamp guttered. In the morning he folded the sheet and walked it to the mill, past the cracked bell, past the river running the wrong way.

Edda read it standing in the doorway with flour on her hands. She did not answer in words. She took the pen from behind her ear, wrote one line beneath his, and handed it back while the ink was still wet.
