Quote tattoo along a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The black and white photograph shows a forearm with the words "You think you have forever, but you don't" tattooed in a serif typewriter-style font. The main line runs diagonally across the arm, with "but you don't" set smaller and higher toward the top right. The crisp black ink contrasts with the pale skin, and the soft background shading keeps the focus on the lettering.

The last typewriter in Cressley Row had a sticking e, and Walter Bird had been promising to fix it since March. He sat on a stool by the window with the carriage off and a tin of oil open beside a cold cup of tea, while rain came sideways off the canal. Ruth had brought the Imperial in wrapped in a tea towel, apologising for it as if it were a dog she had run over.

'It was my mother's,' she said. 'She wrote every Sunday letter on it. Dull things. The weather, the price of coal.'
He turned the machine over. Someone had typed a sheet into it and never taken it out, a single line still caught under the platen, the e and the t bitten hard into the paper. He read it before he could stop himself: You think you have forever, but you don't. It was her mother's work, the letters pressed so deep they looked like they had been argued into the page.
'She typed that for you?' he asked.
'For the back of the calendar. She put it up in the kitchen every January.' Ruth picked at the tea towel. 'She died in the spring. I haven't been able to make it go since.'
Walter worked the stiff key with a pin, lifting dried ink from the arm of the e and then the t, until the letters came up clean. He did not hurry. His own father had taken six hours over a gramophone once and called it a kindness. When he was done he fed a fresh sheet in and typed slowly, one key at a time: Mend it while the light holds. He slid the page out and handed it across, and Ruth laughed through her nose and said that was exactly the sort of thing her mother would have written.
