Agape script with heart on ribs
Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a fine line script tattoo reading agape, with a small outlined heart near the final letter, on the side of a torso. The linework is thin and even, and the ink is solid black with no shading. A hand with red nail polish and a ribbon-shaped ring rests over the lower part of the tattoo, and a white top covers the upper edge of the frame.

Mae had been painting the fair's lettering on the dodgems for eleven years, and she still held the brush the way her father had taught her, loose at the top and pinched near the ferrule. The word she was asked to paint that August was not one she had seen on any ride. Ronnie Vail, who ran the waltzer, wanted it in gold leaf on the back panel of his caravan, under the window where his mother used to sit. He would not say why. He only wrote the Greek word on a beer mat, asked whether she could do it small and fine, the way the old sign-writers did before lettering went to vinyl.

She worked through the night with the generator humming and moths knocking against the lamp. The letters came slowly. Mae let each stroke finish before she lifted, because a hurried line looked like a lie. Near the end she added a small heart in outline only, unfilled, the way her mother had marked the corners of birthday cards. When she stood back at dawn the field was grey with dew and the wheels of the big dipper were still.
Ronnie came out in his vest, looked for a long time, and said nothing. Then he took the brush from her hand, dipped it in the gold, and touched the heart himself, as if he needed to be the one to close it. "She said it was the only word that didn't need translating," he said. Mae packed her tins into the van and left him the last quiet minute of the morning.
