Sergeant Halina Brandt had searched forty-one lorries that month and could tell a false floor from a real one by the sound a boot made on it. The Lindqvist haulier's trailer came through Dover at four in the morning with paperwork that was too neat, a driver who kept touching the wrong pocket, and a load of reclaimed oak pallets stacked to the roof.

She did not look at the pallets first. She looked at the rivets along the rear bulkhead, which sat a hair closer together than the manufacturer's pattern, and at the dust line on the tail-lift, wiped in one clean sweep by someone who believed in tidiness. Her colleague Dev Okafor tapped the panelling with the handle of his torch. It answered hollow.

Behind the panel they found no drugs, no cash, nothing at all, only a shallow cavity lined with grey felt and a brass plate engraved with a set of coordinates and the word winter. The driver swore he had never seen it. Halina believed him, which bothered her more than a lie would have.

Later, on the bench in the cold annex, she turned the plate over and found a line scratched small on the back in a careful serif hand: The best parts of me are hidden. She sealed it in an evidence bag, wrote the reference number with great care, and went to find out who had owned the trailer before it was a trailer.
