Rabbit and roses flash design in a frame
Neo-trad · Black and grey · Flash
A rabbit's head in profile wears a bow beside a large open rose and a smaller rose, with leaves and a curling stem below. The rabbit and roses sit inside an ornate frame of beaded columns and scrolling flourishes, with small diamond shapes scattered in the background. The design is drawn in clean black linework with no shading or colour, shown flat on paper against a wooden surface.

Mind the step, love, the lift's been broken since the summer, so we'll take the stairs and you can count them for me. Fourteen floors up, Mrs Okafor kept a window box of red roses, the sort the council gardener never bothered with, and in the middle of the bed sat a china rabbit called Pearl Thimble who believed she was queen of the ninth floor. She wore a yellow bow every day, even in the rain, and she sat in the window like a picture hung in a gilt case.

The frame was the grandest thing on the block. Its silver beads clicked whenever the wind came off the motorway, and the bits of glass from the cracked pane caught the streetlamp and threw little diamonds across the walls. Mrs Okafor said a pigeon named Desmond had broken that pane, and Pearl Thimble never once corrected her, though everyone knew it had been the lad from flat twelve and his football.
In February the men came with their clipboards and their orange hats, and they said the whole block was coming down by spring. Mrs Okafor refused to go without her roses. So the two lads from the scaffolding carried the window out, frame and rabbit and all, and set it down on the grass in the car park where the sun could reach it. The bow was still tied, the petals still open. Nobody had the heart to say the roses would not last the week.
And that is why, my darling, when you see a rabbit sitting in a frame, you knock before you go in, because she has been waiting for someone to come and fetch her.
