Radishes with leaves on a forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows a bunch of three radishes with full, ruffled green leaves fanning out above them. One radish is pale cream and two are dusky pink, each with soft grey shading and fine dark outlines and root tails. The design is shown on a forearm against a plain wooden background, with the hand relaxed in the frame.

The ringmaster's horse had gone blind in the spring, so the company stopped at every village with a patch of ground and a sack of seed. Mo Tallow carried the seed in his hat. He had been a juggler once, before his wrists gave out, and now he dug the verges while the others sold tickets to nobody.

At Cold Ashby the field behind the chapel had been salted by a sea that no longer came. Mo knelt and pushed three seeds into it, one for the old woman who had fed the company bread, one for the boy who ran off with the drum, and one for himself. Nothing came up for a fortnight. Then the leaves broke through, grey-green and frilled like the skirts the lady acrobat used to wear, and under them the roots swelled, one as cream as milk and two the colour of a bruised plum.
The villagers came to see the freak crop and stayed for the show. They paid in coppers and in eggs. The blind horse, who had refused every trick since winter, found a root pressed into her palm and walked three times around the ring without being asked.
When the company packed for the last time, the ringmaster counted the takings and found the sum short. Mo said nothing. He washed the three roots at the pump and set them on the step of the empty big top. The cream one he gave to the boy. The plum-coloured ones he left for the crows. The leaves he tied with string and hung from the centre pole, where they stayed green all winter, and the old people of Cold Ashby still say that was the only magic a circus ever needed.
