Rainbow dotwork circles on forearm and hand
Dotwork · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A two-panel photograph of a large dotwork tattoo that runs from the forearm over the wrist and onto the back of the hand. The design is built from spiralling rings of small dots that fade from black into rainbow hues, centred on a bare circle. Near the wrist and hand, the dots give way to bold outlined circles filled with red, orange, blue and purple.

Dear Mira, the damp has got into the press again, so every sheet for the seed packets comes out grey at the edges and I have spent three days blaming the weather. Halina does the fine work now. The machine smudges the gradients, so she dips a steel pin in the ink and places each dot by hand, starting black at the rim of a ring and letting the colour climb through red and yellow and green until the inner rings are nearly rainbow. She says it is how the sky looks after rain when you stand under the bridge and look up.

The customs men at the crossing have stopped asking for our permits and now ask to see the sample sheets, the big round ones with the bare circle in the middle where the lamp goes. I told the young one it was a map of where the weather comes from. He turned it over, looked for a stamp, found none, and handed it back with a face I did not like. After that Halina started pinning coloured discs along the bottom edge, fat bright circles like pebbles, each one ringed in black so they hold together.
She left on Thursday's bus with her brother's papers folded inside a library book. Before she went she pinned one last sheet above the press. Four small letters run along its bottom edge in the same careful black, and I have not worked out whether they spell a word or only mark where her hand stopped.
I have not touched the centre of that circle. I keep meaning to fill it, and each morning I leave it bare and go back to the grey edges. Write when the post runs, and tell me if the bus still stops at the river. Tell me too whether they let you keep the sheets.
