Hello Kitty characters sleeve on forearm

Forearm · Colour · Photo

The tattoo covers the forearm with several Hello Kitty characters, each outlined in bold black lines, alongside hearts, flowers, a bow and round candies. Soft pastel shading in blue, pink, orange and purple fills the figures and background, with lighter highlights giving a glossy look. The designs run across the arm in overlapping panels, filling the frame edge to edge.

Sit closer, you lot, the fire only lasts another hour. My gran told me this one, and her gran told her, all the way back to the years when the sky over Leeds still had weather in it. Out past the salt flats stood a sweet-works called Pell and Marrow, and on its gate sat a little white cat with a red bow and no mouth at all, because the founders believed a creature that never speaks can never tell a lie.

Every morning the cat's bow was repainted by a girl named Ysolde, who sorted sugar by colour in the drying hall. She had hands the colour of toffee and a habit of humming when she was worried. One autumn the hall ran short of pink, and the foremen said the batch would have to go out grey. Ysolde crept down to the cellars where the old dyes were kept in bottles with hearts painted on the glass, and she mixed whatever she found: blue, peach, and a violet that smelled of rain.

When the batch came out, every sweet had turned the soft shades of a sunrise seen through a kitchen window, the candies round and glossy as river stones, and little pink flowers pressed into each one. The foremen wanted them sold by the crate. Ysolde wanted them handed out at the gate, one each, to whoever was walking past.

The cat on the gate still has no mouth, but ask the old boilermen and they'll tell you it has been grinning ever since.
