Rainbow hexagon chain on an upper arm
Geometric · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
The tattoo is a chain of outlined hexagons, arranged in a branching, honeycomb-like pattern that winds down the arm towards the elbow. Each cell is filled with a flat, solid colour and the colours move through a rainbow gradient from light green and teal at the top to purple, red, orange and yellow at the bottom. Bold black outlines define every shape against the skin, and the plain background is a dark wall and a purple top.

The rain has got into the chapel again, so you work by lantern light and the grey that comes through what is left of the east window. A carter in the village told you the glass was cut by a monk who counted sixes the way other men counted sheep, and that every pane was a cell made to fit the next. Half of them have gone. The lead came away years ago, and the frames hang in the gaps like combs a colony abandoned in a hurry.

Your task is to match colours. Hester Vane, the steward, has sent you up with a leather roll of sample squares and a tin of dry pigment, because the Duke wants the window mended before his daughter's wedding in June. You start at the top, where the glass is palest, the green of a pear before it ripens, and work down through teal and sea-blue to the violet at the sill, then rust, scarlet and the marigold at the bottom that the damp never reached.
By the third evening you have stopped trying to make the new panes look old. Hester comes up with a candle and holds it against the rebuilt middle row and says nothing for a long while. Then she taps the marigold cell with one fingernail. The monk did not mean the window to be finished, she says. He meant the colours to pass into each other by slow steps, so that nobody could stand in one place and see it whole. You have to walk from the green end to the gold. You look down the nave and see the whole chain from here, every hexagon touching the next, the light moving downward one cell at a time. You pick up the scarlet glass and begin.
