Overlapping coloured hexagons on a forearm
Geometric · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A cluster of three overlapping hexagons sits on the forearm of a person wearing a brown top and jeans. The shapes are filled with translucent yellow, blue and red ink, and their overlaps create green and orange areas, with thin black outlines on some edges. The design is small and centred on the arm against a plain, softly lit background.

Marta had the ovens going by four, and the tiles were still cold under her clogs when she found the tray of tinted sugar her uncle had left out. Three tins of food colouring sat beside it, yellow, blue and red, their lids crusted where someone had been careless. Her uncle called the bakery the honeycomb because of the six-sided tin racks, but to Marta it was only a place that smelled of yeast and burnt butter.

She cut hexagons of sponge from the slab he'd baked the night before, using the wooden template that hung on a nail above the proving cabinet. Then she dipped each one lightly, so the colour soaked in without pooling. Yellow first, pale as the grey light starting to creep over the car park. Blue went over the left edge, red over the right, and where they met the sponge turned a muddy green and a deeper orange, the way paint does when you can't stop yourself adding one more thing.
Her uncle came through the back door at half past five, stamping the wet from his boots, and stopped at the bench. He studied the three shapes stacked on the board for a long time. "Your mother did that with paint once," he said. "Kept mixing until everything went brown." Marta waited for him to be cross. Instead he took a knife, sliced the green piece cleanly in half, and handed her the larger share.
Outside, the sky above the bins had turned the colour of egg glaze, and the first delivery van idled at the kerb. They ate standing up, sugar on their fingers, while the cakes cooled in their rows.
