Rubik's cube head figure on an upper arm
Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A Rubik's cube in bright red, orange, yellow, green, blue and white forms the head of a faceless figure whose torso fades into loose watercolour-style washes. Soft grey shading and dark outlines define the cube and shoulders, while splatters and vertical drips of colour run down the lower part of the design. The tattoo covers most of the upper arm and reaches onto the shoulder, set against a yellow t-shirt.

The puzzle had been sitting on the departures board for three days, and nobody at Platform Four could agree on what it meant. Mrs Okafor swore it was a cipher for the timetable. The boy who sold newspapers said it was a clock that had stopped on purpose. Marcus, who fixed the ticket barriers and had no patience for either theory, simply wanted the thing unscrewed from the wall before the inspector came.

He climbed the stepladder with a screwdriver in his teeth and found the cube was not attached to anything. It was balanced on a column of paint that ran down through the ceiling tiles, and when he touched one red square it turned under his thumb as easily as butter. Each turn left a faint smear of colour on his fingers, orange, then green, then a blue that smelled of rain on hot pavement. Below him the concourse went quiet in the way it only did at half past two in the morning, when even the pigeons stopped arguing.
He solved it without meaning to. The last white face clicked into place, and the cube simply lifted off the column and settled on the stepladder beside him, warm as a loaf. Underneath, the wall was blank, scrubbed clean as if no one had ever hung a clock there. Marcus sat down heavily and listened to the trains that were not running, and somewhere under the tiles a single drip of yellow hit the floor, bright as a signal, and then the last train of the night arrived with its doors already open.
