Rainbow colour wheel tattoo on a forearm
Forearm · Colour · Photo
A circular colour wheel tattoo sits on the forearm, with red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple ink fading softly into one another. The ring has a speckled, spray-like edge and a pale, unshaded centre, giving a loose watercolour effect. The circle is centred in the frame against smooth skin, with a blurred indoor background.

The wool came off the boats in grey hanks, and Nell Ashworth was seventeen before her aunt Hester let her near the vats. The dye-house on Cobble Lane ran four colours a day, and the gutters ran the rest. On the wall above the copper hung a wheel of painted tin, red bleeding into orange, yellow into green, blue into a violet so deep it looked wet. Hester tapped it with a stained knuckle. "Every colour is a neighbour of the one beside it," she said. "Mix a neighbour and you get peace. Mix across the wheel and you get mud."

Nell learned it the hard way. In March she tried to make a sky for a christening shawl by tipping indigo straight into madder, and the cloth came out the colour of a bruise. Hester said nothing. She soaked the shawl in alum and hung it in the yard where the wind could argue with it. By Saturday the stain had softened into rings, each shade stepping into the next, and a round patch at the centre had stayed bare, because the dye had never reached it.
"That's the bit you leave," Hester said. "White isn't a colour you add. It's where you stop."
Years later, when Nell kept the works herself, she had the wheel painted on the lintel above the door, and she left its middle unpainted so the plaster showed through. Customers asked why it looked unfinished. On wet mornings the bare circle filled with grey sky, and she never once thought to paint over it.
