Shut that door, Dai, the draught gets under the blanket and I'll be coughing till Tuesday. Pass the cup this way before the youngsters drink the lot. Now, the Glen Ddu pit never gave back anything but coal and bad air, and the men thought that was the whole of its bargain until the spring of the big fall.

Eli Rowe was on his knees under the timber when he heard breathing that was not his own and not a pony's. The lamp guttered. Then there was a beast standing in the roadway, pale as a candle in a chapel, and its mane ran from pink at the crown to violet, then blue, then green and yellow at the tips, as though someone had taken a rainbow and combed it through the dust. Its horn was a golden spiral, twisted tight as a barber's pole. It did not flinch from the falling grit. It came close and breathed on his hand, and the cough that had lived in his chest for twenty years went quiet as a closed door.

It led him along a gallery the surveyors swore was solid rock, to a seam where the coal shone like wet slate and the air ran clean and cold. He cut where it nodded, and by dawn the men had found the crack that let them out. Nobody else ever saw the beast, though the doctor later said the old lungs had no business being so steady.

When they came up into the grey morning, Eli stopped at the top of the shaft and turned back. Across the spoil heap hung a curve of colour, pink and blue and gold, lasting until the first shift horn. Eli's lamp was found on the ledge with a curl of bright hair caught on its bail, and from that day nobody in Glen Ddu called the coal black without first looking for the light in it.
