Cat in an ice cream cone on a forearm

Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A cartoon cat with large blue eyes, a pink nose and a small pink heart on its forehead forms the top of an ice cream cone, with teal and purple soft serve on its head. Thick black outlines define the design, with soft blue and turquoise drips running down the cat's face and cone and shaded waffle lattice on the cone. Pink and white sparkles sit around the figure on a light skin tone, against a teal top and a darker background.

The rain had got into the sugar again, so Nell tipped the bag of waffle cones onto the trestle and sorted the soft ones from the sound. Water ran off the awning in a rope and spattered the tarpaulin over the fruit crates. Across the square the fishmonger was packing away his slabs, swearing at the gulls.

The girl came back at half past three, hood up on a yellow raincoat, a coin clutched so hard its edge had printed itself into her palm. "Can you do the cat?" Nell had drawn it years ago on the back of a delivery note: a cat with huge blue eyes, sitting in a cone. She had never sold one. Today the girl had brought her own copy, folded in quarters and gone soft at the creases.

Nell built it slowly. Waffle first, the lattice pressed in with the back of a spoon. Then teal and violet soft serve twisted into a crown. For the face she used peach sorbet, two sapphire sweets for eyes and a sliver of raspberry for the nose. The girl watched every move without blinking, as if the cat might climb out of the cone.

"It'll melt," Nell warned, passing it over. "Eat the ears first, they go quickest." The girl ate the ears. Blue drips ran down her wrist and under her sleeve and onto the pavement, where the rain took them. Nell tucked the old delivery note back beneath the counter, where it had stayed dry for years, and reached for the next cone.
