Rainbow overlapping circles on an upper arm

Geometric · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A rainbow-coloured design of overlapping circles forms a rosette or flower shape on the outer upper arm. The outlines are fine and the colour is built from translucent layers that blend where the circles overlap, shifting from magenta and red through green and blue. The design sits centre frame against a plain pale background, with a grey gingham sleeve rolled up above it.

Sit down, the lot of you, and mind the lift, it still goes up when it likes. This is about Brindle Court, the fourteen-storey block that went up where the gasworks used to be, and about the man who mended its stairwell window.

His name was Ivo Penhallow, and he came up from the depot in a van full of coloured gel sheets, the sort they used to clip over theatre lamps. Nobody had asked him to bring them. The council wanted one new pane for the ninth-floor landing, and Ivo came back with three colours instead: a red like a postbox, a blue like the inside of a mussel shell, and a green like a bottle held up to the sun. He cut them into rings and laid them one over another, the way you'd lay out a hand of cards, so that wherever two met, a third colour rose up out of them like a word passed along a row of children.

The kids on the walkway counted the circles every evening. Six, then seven, then the whole wheel of them. Mrs Okafor on the fourth floor, who never came out for anyone, said the middle was the only part worth looking at. Ivo said it was where the light went to rest. It was the one place where every colour sat on top of every other and the result came out nearly black, quiet as a held breath.

When the sun drops behind the flats now, Brindle Court throws that whole wheel across the car park, and if you stand very still on the concrete you can see the dark place at its centre, holding all the rest of the colour together. Right, hop it, your mothers are shouting.
