Three overlapping coloured circles on a forearm
Geometric · Forearm · Colour · Photo
Three overlapping circles in teal, red and yellow sit on the forearm, and their translucent overlaps create green, deep blue and purple tones. The circles have solid, even fills and crisp edges, giving a flat, graphic finish. The softly blurred blossom and tartan dress behind the arm keep the focus on the design.

The mule had lost a crate on the scree below Hollin Gap, and Maren was the only one who had seen it go. She stood at the lip of the pass with the wind pulling at her hood and watched the lid split against the rocks, spilling three stoppered bottles: a teal like a kingfisher's back, a cochineal red, and a yellow ground from weld. The glass held, but the dyes inside ran together where the rain had already pooled.

Her father had taught her that colour was only light that refused to leave. Teal swallowed red and gave back blue and green. Red gave back itself and little else. Yellow gave back whatever it could spare. Where two of them met, the cloth took only what both would let through, so the overlaps came out dark or strange. He said the dyers in the valley towns had worked this out a century before the printers, and that any child with a cup of madder could see it for herself.
She went down the scree on her heels, gathering the sodden paper twists and pressing them into her coat. When the mule came round the bend with the foreman swearing at it, she had a handful of pale rags stained with all three overlaps: green where teal met yellow, a deep navy where teal met red, a bruised violet where red met yellow, and at the centre, where all three sat, something close to ink.
The foreman asked what good any of it was now. She dipped a rag in the rainwater, wrung it over the cask lid, and let him watch the three colours spread until they slid into one another and became a single dark brown. Then she wiped her palm across her forearm, and the three circles of stain stayed exactly where they were, each one still itself beneath the others.
