Rainbow peacock feather on a forearm
Forearm · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows a stylised peacock feather running down the forearm, with a green and teal eye at the base and a small purple and teal diamond shape at the top. The thin strands of the feather are filled with bright rainbow colours including yellow, orange, pink, blue and purple. The shading is smooth and the tattoo sits on a plain, evenly lit area of skin against a patterned cardigan.

The peacock had been moulting since Tuesday, and by Thursday there were feathers in every bed along the south wall, caught in the lavender like misdelivered post. Tomasz from the allotments wanted to sell them at the church fete. I told him they weren't ours to sell, and he said that was exactly the sort of thing my father would have said, which is how I knew I'd lost the argument before it started.

I found the one that mattered under the rhubarb, bent and muddy, its eye still wet-bright. Dad called the bird Admiral and fed him sultanas from his palm for thirty years. In the grey light of the afternoon the feather looked like old bronze, nothing special. But when I held it up to the window of the potting shed, the light came through the barbs and broke into every colour the sweet peas had ever been: yellow, orange, a pink like the inside of a shell, a blue like a vein under thin skin, violet at the tips.
The little diamond at the quill was the bit I could never draw. Dad had used a brass ring to pin feathers to the seed trays so they wouldn't blow away, and it was still in my apron pocket where I'd left it in March. I fixed the feather to the shed door beside his calendar, ring and all. Within the hour Admiral came stalking down the path, head tilted, and stood looking at it as though he'd been waiting for someone to notice.
I left it there. Some things in a garden are meant for the next person to find, and I have never once wanted to be the one who tidies them away.
