Rainbow rose on a shoulder

Neo-trad · Shoulder · Colour · Photo

A large rose fills the frame, with its petals shaded in blue, purple, red, orange, yellow and green, and its centre curling into deep violet. Bold black outlines and faceted petal shapes give it a stylised look, while dark grey wash shading behind the bloom and at its lower edge adds depth. The tattoo sits on the upper back and shoulder, with soft skin and part of the arm visible around it.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You learn the colours before you learn the knots. Your uncle keeps a tin of enamel paints on the net loft windowsill at Porthkennack, and every spring he lets you mix the blue for the wheelhouse of the Marigold Jean until it matches the water off Mouse Rock at six in the morning. Blue first, always, because the sea takes blue off everything else.

The rose comes in March, after the old name has been scraped away. Your uncle says the first owner wanted a rose, though nobody in the harbour remembers her face. You lay the petals out on a scrap of board with a fine brush, starting at the dark violet heart and working outward: red, then orange where the sun catches the hull, yellow for the lamp on the quay, green for the weed that tangles the pots. Each petal gets a hard black edge, square and deliberate, so it looks cut from sea glass rather than grown.

On the last Thursday of the season the wind goes round to the east and the fleet stays in. You sit in the loft with the paints drying, and your uncle climbs the ladder slowly, one hand pressed to his hip. He looks at the rose for a long time, then asks you to put the name back underneath it, in gold, the way it used to be.

You do it at dusk, the gold leaf catching the last light through the loft window, while below the water goes from blue to grey to nothing. The rose keeps its colours anyway, every petal still tacky to the touch, and in the morning the boat goes out with all of them showing.
