Blue rose with beaded drape on upper arm

Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo

A large blue rose with shaded petals and bold black outlines fills the upper arm and top of the shoulder, framed by dark shaded leaves. A strand of beads with teardrop pendants hangs in a loose swag beneath the flower. The rose is rendered in blue tones with soft gradients, while the leaves and beads use black and grey shading against a plain light skin background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Aske came in on a wet Tuesday with her necklace wrapped in a handkerchief, and Thomas Lowe, nine months into his apprenticeship at the pawn counter, knew before he unfolded it that the beads were not pearls. They were pale glass strung on silk gone the colour of weak tea, and the drops at the bottom were shaped like tears. Mr Hale did not look up from his ledger. "Tell her it's paste," he said, "and offer a shilling for the clasp."

Thomas did not say it. He turned the lowest drop under the lamp and found it hollow, a thimble of blue enamel with a rose painted inside so finely he had to tip it to the light to find the petals. Mrs Aske watched him with her gloved hands folded in her lap. "My husband had it made," she said. "Every spring a florist in Bold Street sent him a blue rose, though there's no such thing in nature. He said that made it the only honest flower in Liverpool, because it had to be told what it was."

Hale's shilling sat on the counter between them. Thomas wrote a ticket for five pounds anyway, which would come out of his wages, and tucked it into the handkerchief with the beads. Mrs Aske did not come back that month, or the next. In December a florist's boy brought in a blue rose under a glass dome, its petals dyed through with ink, and a note in careful copperplate: Mr Lowe, the enamel is yours to keep if you can paint one like it. Thomas read it twice, then took out his brushes.
