Rainbow watercolour Mickey Mouse silhouette on upper arm
Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A tattoo of the Mickey Mouse head silhouette sits on the upper arm, drawn with bold black outline that has a loose, sketchy edge. The interior is filled with blended washes of pink, red, orange, yellow, green, purple and blue, with soft edges and no hard shading. The tattoo fills the centre of the frame against a plain white top and a red wall.

Nobody in Gull Terrace could agree on who first drew the three circles on the back wall of Mrs Pargeter's boarding house, only that they had been there since the week the paint tins came off the Cardiff boat, sodden and gone to mush. Mrs Pargeter said her nephew had done it with a stub of charcoal while the lodgers slept. Her nephew said it was the tide.

The black lines were quick and loose, the way a man sketches when he is late for a train, and they wobbled wherever the damp had got into the plaster. Inside them the colours had soaked through from the tins: rose, then a bruise of violet, then a sun-coloured orange that bled up toward the ceiling rose. Guests came down to breakfast and stood looking at it over their kippers. A retired schoolmaster from Leeds asked whether it was a map. Nobody answered him.
In August the scullery flooded and the wall stayed wet for a fortnight. When the plaster dried, the outline had faded to a grey ghost and the colours had run into one another, green into blue, until the whole thing looked like weather. Mrs Pargeter went at it with a stiff brush and a bucket of vinegar on the Saturday, muttering under her breath. By Sunday she had stopped.
The black line held. Vinegar and sea salt would not shift it, and the rest of the house could make of that what it liked. The nephew said it had been drawn in something stubborn, and she told him it was only charcoal, and went to put the kettle on.
