The cage at Harrowgate Bank went down at five and came back up with whoever was lucky enough to be on it, and Nell Corran kept her boy's hand in hers all the way to the lamp-room. The old women said a child who wouldn't be held would go down the shaft looking for something else. Her husband Tom had gone down the night before and had not come up on the last shift, and the whole row knew what that meant before the whistle sounded.

Davy was six and asked questions. He asked whether the mountain had a face, whether the men underground could hear the church bell, and why his mam kept touching her hair. She told him the truth in small pieces. The far seam had flooded, the rescue men were working the gallery, and she had pinned a pink chapel flower into her hair that morning because it was the only bright thing left in the house.
On the third day a pit pony came up the incline alone, a green tin helmet hanging from its harness. Men said a light had been seen in the old workings where no lamp should burn. Nell took Davy to the shaft head and they stood there in the wind, singing the song Tom always hummed at the bottom of the stairs. Then came three knocks up the air pipe. Davy knocked three times back on the iron rail, as his father had taught him, and the answer came again, slower.
Tom came up that evening, grey with dust, with a lamp he had kept burning by sharing its oil with the pony. Years later Davy drew his mother in profile with her hair full of chapel flowers, and beside them he always put two green hearts, one for the man who came home and one for the pony who carried the word.
