Watercolour-style poppies on ribs
Botanical · Ribs · Colour · Photo
Three poppies with black outline linework and loose orange, red and green wash fills are arranged up the side of the ribs, with a stem running down the lower half. Black dots and smudged black shading sit among the flowers, and the washes bleed beyond the outlines to give a painted look. The photograph is taken close up on bare skin against a dark top, with a red wall and a drink cup blurred in the background.

The rain came late to the Mojave that year, and by the second week of March the shoulder of the road past Dry Lake had gone the colour of a struck match. You pull the van onto the gravel because the wipers have given up arguing with the glass. Behind you, Dani leans between the seats and says the flowers look painted on, like someone ran out of water halfway through a job.

Your grandmother pressed poppies in a Bible on this same stretch in 1978, and the page still holds their ghosts, papery and brown. She always said the trick was to pick them before the petals decided to fall, and that the stems bled a green milk onto your fingers. You kneel in the ditch now, shoes full of grit, and do exactly what she did: snap one stem low, then another, quick and careless, until your hands smell bitter and bright.
A pickup slows as it passes, the driver lifting two fingers from the wheel the way people do out here. The stems in your fist are already drooping. Dani laughs and tells you they won't last the afternoon, and you say you know, that's the point, you only wanted to carry some of the colour out of the sand for a while. Then you climb back in and drive, and in the mirror the orange keeps going for miles, bleeding past its own edges into the grey scrub as if it has never once agreed to stay inside a line.
